Looking Forward...

...To a new year.

Today is December 18, 2011. Exactly one year after my college graduation.

A lot has changed in the last year.

Lately...

First blog post of 2011! And January is almost over. Wow, how's that for ya??

A whole lot has happened in the last 19 days, so here's a (semi) quick rundown of everything going on. Let's move backwards.

Jada, Jake and Me
over the Christmas holiday

Me and the K-Dawg on my birthday!

Right Now: I'm watching Sixteen Candles in my bed and drinking a glass of wine. The current scene is the one when Farmer Ted follows Andie into the auto shop and tries to serenade her with Beatles songs. Unfortunately, I think I too have been groped in a car while the Beatles played in the background. Sad, sad day.

Where's MY Jake Ryan?
Jock: Jake, come on. She's obviously too young to party seriously.
Jake Ryan: Maybe I'M interested in more than just a party.

Jake Ryan: (Later) I want a serious girlfriend. Someone to love that'll love me back.

RELEVANT Magazine's What To Know When You're 25(ish)

Right now I'm watching Everyday Italian. That Giada sure knows her stuff. Does it mean I'm getting old(er) when I choose to watch HGTV, Food Network, the Cooking Channel or any number of the cake/cupcake shows on TLC? :)

By the way, right now she's making a care package for her niece who's away at college and, man, what I would give for Giada DiLaurentis to put together a care package for ME! Best. Aunt. Ever.

Anyway, on the subject of getting older... It still hasn't sunk in to me that I won't be going back to school in a couple of weeks when my friends do. :(

Put Your Big Girl Panties On & Deal With It!

I'm at work right now and I'm a little on the bored side, so I'm going to blog so it looks like I'm doing something. :) Note: I can only do this for three more days (waste time at work, that is)!

I Have A Plan

There are 19 days until graduation and I still don't have a job. But I have a plan.

Almost Famous

My brother being his ballin' self

This is my 17 year old brother, doing what he loves. He is wonderful and better than me in many ways. He is my best friend, my hero and my inspiration for many things. Recently, I allowed him to be my inspiration for a class assignment. I am currently taking a creative writing class and we have no boundaries, so I wrote about a boy that loves basketball.

To my surprise, the story got a decent amount of praise from my instructor and my classmates. "I don't know if you ever played basketball," one classmate said (I did for 10 years, by the way.), "but I feel like I'm back in high school. That's exactly how it is." I was also afraid of what my brother would say if he read it, but he said it was "badass," so I feel comfortable enough to post it here. Read on if you'd like to.

Train Tracks

I know the plans I have for you,
declares the LORD. They are plans for
peace and not disaster, plans to give you a
future filled with hope. -- Jeremiah 29:11

This verse has been my favorite for about six years now and these words are more true for me now than they ever have been. Graduation is fast approaching -- I bought my class ring yesterday and my cap and gown package and announcements today -- and I am still flying as blind as ever.

The Opposite of Domesticity

According to a number of online thesauruses, domesticity doesn't have an antonym. If it did though, that word could be used to describe me. Let me tell you a story.

I will never be a good wife if I keep baking cakes that look like this.

Seed: Time Capsule of Life by Pastor Carl Toti

Every week, I get "Pastor Carl's Weekly Encouragement" sent to my e-mail. Carl is the pastor at Trinity Church in Lubbock and I really enjoy his sermons. His food for thought this week is about the power of a seed. You know, "the faith of a mustard seed" and such. Here it is:

Something's Missing

I am a person that likes patterns. I go through the same routine everyday: wake up, shower, fix breakfast, put on make-up (while eating said breakfast), blow-dry/style hair (while still eating said breakfast), brush teeth, get dressed, leave. I am out the door within five minutes of the same time everyday.

I guess I like patterns. It gives me comfort to know what will be going on each day and when. I'm not really a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl, and I thrive in the midst of a routine.

However, some patterns are meant to be broken.

I Got Spaghetti Sauce On My Sleeve

How that happened is beyond me. But, of all the people in the world, of course it would happen to me.

I was the cleanest baby in the world (aside from the standard spit-ups and poopy diapers), until my pediatrician dubbed me "Messy Jesse," simply because it rhymed. Since then, I've been a mess in every aspect of the word.

I drop things, I spill things, I fall down, I run into things a lot, my apartment is a state of controlled chaos. Sunday afternoon, I fell and turned my ankle, walking barefoot across a flat surface while rounding the corner from one room to another. That takes true talent, my friends.

Mama Told Me (Not to Come)

Well, actually she didn't, but I'm listening to Three Dog Night right now.

Life is rough and stressful. School is driving me nuts. I need a job. I went to a career fair yesterday and networked with some peeps, so maybe something will come from that. I really like Lubbock and I would like to stay here, but I'll leave if I'm forced. :(

I've always been one to have a plan for my life and right now I don't. I am in a state of constant freak-out due to that. Grad school? Full-time job? Paid internship? What about benefits?

I have a job interview on Tuesday, so that's encouraging. But...it's in sales and my degree will be in journalism. I have this line that I use informing employers with a communications degree that you can really do anything, but I don't really know how true that is. Surely, I could LEARN to do anything, but not if someone won't give me the opportunity to learn. And with a slim number of jobs available in the area for journalists, I'm having to try out opportunities in other areas.

Graduating college is turning out to be nothing like I expected. I don't even know what I expected, but this isn't it. Don't ever let anyone tell you that having a college degree automatically gets you a job. Yes, it helps A LOT, but it is no guarantee. Especially if your degree field is a "dying profession," or something to that effect.

On Monday, I will be exactly two months away from graduating.

Let Me Know If You Need Anything

My grandmother had a stroke yesterday.

"Check your voicemail," said a text from my mom.

I told her there was no voicemail.

"It was supposed to say that I was just letting you know I'm in the ER with Nanny. They think she had a stroke," she said when she called me back.

Tuesday

I really don't know what to say other than Labor Day weekend was the most eventful of weekends I've experienced in 2010. I consumed alcoholic beverages on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That probably wasn't a good idea and I'm going to be paying for it in the gym this week, but I had never done that before so I figured I'd give irresponsibility a shot.

Vintage! Otra vez

This post made a lot of people mad. I don't really know why. I was just expressing what I was feeling when I was feeling it. But, I guess that's the story of my life.

August 31, 2010

Um...

I don't know what to write about today.

Oopsie...

Side note: 109 days til graduation!
